GRAND CAMPAIGN
Overlander combines tactical tabletop battles with a long-term realm-building campaign. The game operates on a persistent, continuous scale with a weekly update day during which changes are carried through and income is generated. Players can act on their own time while contributing to a developing narrative unfolding on the Campaign Map.
Players can schedule and initiate battles against players at any time. There’s no rigid schedule—simply declare your intent to conquer a territory, assault a rival’s realm or trade routes, or tackle a pre-made Quest Battle. Any other Player can then step up to contest you in battle, scheduling the fight at a time that works for both of you. Victory in these battles, along with the conquest of lands and completion of key objectives, earns you the resources needed to recruit new warriors, build infrastructure across your territories, and issue new edicts to solidify your rule.
Outside of battles, there are many tools with which to build up your domain:
Realm Development. Exploit local resources, construct new buildings, and expand your rule while managing the stability of your domain to avoid violent uprisings, corruption, or squalor.
Edicts. Sign orders, laws and reforms to influence both internal and external affairs through measures such as taxes, martial law, festivals, sabotage, or political assassinations.
Trade. Exchange key resources such as iron or lumber with other players or neutral trading hubs to generate income and gain access to resources from far beyond your borders.
Diplomacy. Engage with other players to forge steadfast alliances or bitter rivalries to either cooperate or compete for objectives. Rise to power as king or serve as loyal vassal, or rebel and start your Faction on a path to independence.
Each player can focus on the aspect of the game they resonate with the most. Are you interested only in warfare? Team up with a player who prefers the intricacies of rulership or diplomacy, and vice versa. The game scales up to a large number of players, with the possibility to include more than 30 people in one campaign.
TACTICAL BATTLES
Battles in Overlander can be fought both on physical and virtual tabletops. Using an elegant D6 dice pool system, you can take direct control of your units on the battlefield. Command anywhere between 20 to over a 100 individual models and outmanoeuvre your opponents. Ensure favourable match-ups by utilizing units with different equipment such as spears or maces, light armour or heavy armour, cavalry, war machines, beasts, and unique elite troops to achieve victory and gain the wealth and prestige needed to propel your realm to glory.
Battles can be scheduled by players independently at a time convenient to them. Results can be tracked easily and made public to tie them into the developing campaign.
ASYNCHRONOUS GAMEPLAY
A Grand Campaign in Overlander can unfold over the course of many weeks or months. Players can act on their own time thanks to a weekly (or longer) 'tick' system during which production, construction, resources, taxes, and recruitment are updated to keep everyone on the same page.
Plan ahead to get the most out of the territories and resources at your disposal and specialize your realm in clever ways to capitalize on the niches and needs of the realm around you. Supply desperate players with troops or resources at high prices, fight battles for them in return for servitude, or otherwise set the fate of the realm to your hand through diplomacy, intrigue, and strategy.
LEAVE YOUR MARK
Overlander comes with a premade setting providing a background within which to both immerse yourself and rise above by selecting and customizing a Heritage and making your own Faction. There are many roles to fill, and with a large pool of players there are always alliances and enemies to be made. As you compete to complete competitive and collaborative goals, the tapestry of the world around you will change. New realms will rise, others will crumble.
The setting of Athalar takes broad inspiration from cultures all over the world in a relatively low fantasy bronze age to early medieval setting. With influences from sources as widespread as pre-contact America, through European antiquity, and into ancient cradles of civilization such as Mesopotamia.
